Seven days
Seven Days Is the Divers’ Route
The outer sites — Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Horseshoe Bay — are too far from Labuan Bajo for a short charter to reach and return. Seven days is what buys them, and the reason to book it is the diving rather than the scenery.
- 7 days
- Six nights aboard
- Outer sites
- Crystal · Castle · Horseshoe
- Night dive
- Possible on this length
- Apr – Oct
- Best conditions
Quick answer
Seven days reaches the sites the shorter routes physically cannot: Crystal Rock and Castle Rock in the north, Taka Makassar, and Horseshoe Bay in the south — plus the time to dive them properly rather than once each.
- Six nights aboard, and enough margin that a blown-out day does not cost you a site.
- Certification matters here. Crystal Rock and Castle Rock run current; they are not snorkelling sites.
- Park entry and dive permits are charged per guest and confirmed before departure.
Day by day
Six Nights, and the Sites They Reach
Dive sites are chosen on the day against current and visibility. A site that runs badly is swapped, not forced.
01 Day
Labuan Bajo & first anchorage
Embarkation
Morning
Board at Labuan Bajo. Kit check, dive briefing and a gear fit before anything else — on a seven-day dive charter this hour saves two later.
Afternoon & evening
Out through the karst to a sheltered anchorage. Check dive in easy water to sort weighting and buoyancy. Sunset from the upper deck.
02 Day
Rinca & the coral gardens
Short hops
Morning
Loh Buaya on foot with a park ranger. Dragons, savannah, and the prey animals that explain why they are there.
Afternoon & evening
Manta Alley in the south when the current suits it — mantas on the cleaning stations rather than in open water. Anchor nearby.
03 Day
Padar & Pink Beach
Pre-dawn start
Morning
The Padar ridge before sunrise. It is a climb, it is worth it, and being first up is the whole point.
Afternoon & evening
Pink Beach: reef straight off the sand, and an easy dive or long snorkel to reset before the northern run.
04 Day
Gili Lawa · Crystal & Castle Rock
North
Morning
Crystal Rock on the morning slack — a pinnacle in current, and one of the two sites this itinerary exists for. Fish in numbers you do not see inshore.
Afternoon & evening
Castle Rock in the afternoon, then the Gili Lawa hill at last light. Anchor in the bay below it.
05 Day
Taka Makassar & the sandbars
Short hops
Morning
Taka Makassar — a sandbar that appears and disappears with the tide, with reef on both sides of it.
Afternoon & evening
Night dive if conditions allow, then stargazing at anchor. No light pollution this far out.
06 Day
Horseshoe Bay
South
Morning
The southern run to Horseshoe Bay. Cooler water, different life, and the macro diving that the northern sites do not offer.
Afternoon & evening
A second dive, then the farewell dinner aboard at anchor in the bay.
07 Day
Return to Labuan Bajo
Back to port
Morning
A last shallow dive or a long swim — nothing deep on the final morning, because of the flight.
Afternoon & evening
Sail in past the karst, disembark at Labuan Bajo, transfers arranged to your flight.
Park entry, ranger guide and dive permits are charged per guest and administered per region. Current tariffs are confirmed before departure rather than published here.
Why the length matters here
Three, Five or Seven
The outer sites are not a bonus on a shorter charter, they are out of range. Crystal Rock and Castle Rock in the north and Horseshoe Bay in the south sit at opposite ends of the park, and a vessel that has to be back in Labuan Bajo on day three or five never gets to either. Seven days is the shortest itinerary that can hold both.
The second thing the length buys is tolerance. Dive sites in Komodo run on current, and a site that is unworkable on Tuesday is often fine on Thursday. On a three-day charter a blown-out morning costs you the site; on seven it costs you nothing.
- Three days The landmarks
- Rinca, Padar, Pink Beach and one manta site. A first visit, or a short window.
- Five days + northern anchorages
- Gili Lawa, western coves, and real dive time.
- Seven days + the outer sites
- Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Taka Makassar, Horseshoe Bay, and margin for a bad day.
