Three days
The Short Komodo Route: Dragons, Padar, Manta
Three days is the shortest itinerary that still reaches the three things people come for — a dragon on foot, the Padar ridgeline, and a manta in open water. It leaves nothing spare, which is the trade.
- 3 days
- Two nights aboard
- 3 landfalls
- Rinca · Padar · Pink Beach
- Labuan Bajo
- Departure and return
- Apr – Oct
- Best conditions
Quick answer
Three days covers the core of Komodo National Park from Labuan Bajo and back: the dragons at Rinca, the Padar viewpoint, Pink Beach, and one manta site. It does not reach the outer dive sites.
- Two nights aboard, so one full day is transit-light and two are not.
- Park entry and ranger fees are charged per guest and confirmed before departure.
- If diving is the point rather than the scenery, five or seven days is the honest answer.
Day by day
What Three Days Actually Fits
Times shift with tide, weather and the park’s own scheduling. The captain decides the running order on the morning, not the brochure.
01 Day
Rinca & Padar
From Labuan Bajo
Morning
Board at Labuan Bajo and run out to Rinca. Loh Buaya on foot with a park ranger — mandatory ashore, and the reason a dragon walk is safe rather than a gamble. Savannah and monitor lizards in the open rather than behind glass.
Afternoon & evening
Sail on to Padar and climb the ridge for the three-bay view that carries most of Komodo’s photography. Anchor for the night in a sheltered bay; dinner aboard on deck.
02 Day
Manta water & Pink Beach
Short hops
Morning
Early to the manta site while the current is still working — mantas feed on it, so the timing is not negotiable. Snorkel or dive depending on certification and the day’s conditions.
Afternoon & evening
Pink Beach for the afternoon: the sand takes its colour from crushed red coral, and the reef starts a few metres off it. Swim, kayak, or take the tender out. Second night at anchor.
03 Day
Return to Labuan Bajo
Back to port
Morning
One last swim from the deck, then the sail back. On a clear morning the run in past the karst islands is the best hour of the three days and the one most itineraries waste on packing.
Afternoon & evening
Disembark at Labuan Bajo. Transfers to the airport arranged to your flight rather than to a fixed time.
Park entry, ranger guide and any dive permits are charged per guest and administered per region. Current tariffs are confirmed before departure rather than published here — they are revised.
Choosing the length
Three, Five or Seven
Duration is the single biggest decision on a Komodo charter, and it is decided by what you want rather than by budget. Three days reaches the landmarks. Five adds the northern anchorages and enough diving to justify the gear. Seven reaches the outer sites — Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Horseshoe Bay — that the short routes cannot.
- Three days The landmarks
- Rinca, Padar, Pink Beach and one manta site. A first visit, or a short window.
- Five days + northern anchorages
- Adds Gili Lawa, secluded coves and real diving time. The most common choice.
- Seven days + the outer sites
- Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Taka Makassar, Horseshoe Bay. For divers.
