Chartering a phinisi

Before You Buy One, Sail One

A week aboard tells a buyer more than any specification sheet: how a 27-metre hull actually handles thirty guests, whether eight cabins or sixteen suits the way you travel, and what a crew of seven really covers.

Quick answer

Komodo charters run from Labuan Bajo in three, five or seven days. Length decides reach rather than comfort — every extra night moves the vessel further from port and into water the day boats never work.

  • Vessels of this class charter at USD 1,800 to 30,000 per yacht per night.
  • Park entry and dive permits are charged per guest and confirmed before departure.
  • A charter is also the most honest survey a prospective buyer can run.

Three routes

Pick by Reach, Not by Budget

The difference between the three is which anchorages a vessel can get to and still be back in Labuan Bajo on time.

Two nights

Three days — the landmarks

Rinca for the dragons, the Padar ridge, Pink Beach, and one manta site. It reaches everything people arrive expecting and leaves nothing spare. A first visit, or a short window between flights.

Four nights

Five days — the usual choice

Adds the northern anchorages around Gili Lawa, the secluded western coves, and enough dive time that carrying gear makes sense. The first length with a full day that has no passage in it.

Six nights

Seven days — the divers’ route

Crystal Rock and Castle Rock in the north, Taka Makassar, Horseshoe Bay in the south. These sit at opposite ends of the park and are simply out of range on anything shorter.

What applies to guests

The Rules That Are Not Negotiable

Komodo is a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of what follows is the park’s requirement rather than the vessel’s preference.

  • Required

    Park entry, per guest

Charged per person and administered by the park authority. Confirmed with you before departure.

    Komodo National Park

  • Required

    Ranger-led walks ashore

A park ranger leads every walk on Rinca and Komodo. That is what makes a dragon encounter safe rather than a gamble.

    Komodo National Park

  • Conditional

    Dive permits

Separate from park entry, and charged per diver at the popular sites.

    If you dive

  • Required

    No contact with the reef

Including standing on it. Coral recovers from a footprint over decades.

    Marine park

  • Required

    Nothing overboard

No waste of any kind. The crew manages all of it, including anything biodegradable.

    Marine park

  • Required

    Sailing approval per leg

The captain files for port clearance at every departure. It is why an itinerary is confirmed on the morning rather than a month out.

    Harbourmaster

Park tariffs are revised and are confirmed before departure rather than published here. The previous build carried five different figures for the Komodo entry fee across four pages, two of them on the same page.

Two reasons to charter

A Week Aboard, or a Week of Due Diligence

Guests charter to be in Komodo. Buyers charter to find out what they actually want — how a hull handles, how many cabins is right, what a crew covers. Tell us which you are and the recommendation changes.
