What a Phinisi Actually Costs to Build or Buy

What the vessels on our book actually ask, and the four things that set the number. Every figure here is a published asking price, not an estimate.

What actually sets the price

Quick answer

The vessels on our book ask USD 153,000 to USD 1,120,000 across 22 to 38 metres. Length alone does not set that: VIP III and VIP IV are both 27 metres and one asks 3.6 times the other, and VIP XI asks more than any of them at 34.4 metres — shorter than only VIP V and VIP VI on the book.

  • Cabin count and beam move the price more than length does.
  • Working hulls suited to a refit project trade far below turn-key builds.
  • A vessel transferring with charter contracts attached carries a premium over an identical empty one.

The book

What Every Vessel Is Actually Asking

Published asking prices, transcribed from each vessel’s own specification sheet. Not estimates, not brackets — the number on the listing.

Vessel Length × beam Cabins / guests Asking
VIP XI 34.4 m × 6.3 m 8 / 18 USD 1,120,000
VIP X 33.45 m × 6 m 8 / 24 USD 833,333
VIP VI 38 m × 6.8 m 8 / 21–25 USD 682,000
VIP V 38 m × 7.5 m 16 / 30 USD 553,000
VIP IV 27 m × 9.5 m 10 / 20 USD 553,000
VIP VII 30 m × 6 m 5 / 13 USD 444,444
VIP VIII 25 m × 5.6 m 7 / 15 USD 444,444
VIP IX 30 m × 5.1 m 7 / 21 USD 444,444
VIP III 27 m × 4.7 m 7 / 20 USD 153,000
VIP II 22 m × 4.4 m 5 / 12 USD 153,000
VIP I 31 m × 5.8 m 5 / 12 Sold

Asking prices in USD, excluding survey, delivery and registration. VIP I is shown as a sold comparable. ⚠ VIP IV’s source page states 27 m in its specification table and 38 m in its prose; the table is used here and the discrepancy is with the desk.

The 3.6x question

Why Two 27-Metre Hulls Differ by USD 400,000

VIP III and VIP IV are the same length. One asks USD 153,000 and the other USD 553,000. The gap is entirely in the specification, and it is visible line by line.

Beam
9.5 m

VIP III is 4.7 m — barely half the deck area on the same length

Cabins
10

VIP III carries 7

Engine
Mitsubishi 6D22 & RF 10

VIP III runs the smaller 6d16

Electrical
3 × 45 kVA

VIP III has 30 kVA with a 7,500 W emergency set

Water
25 tons + 4 tons/day maker

VIP III carries 8,000 L and no maker

Navigation
Radar and echo sounder fitted

VIP III has compass, GPS, AIS and map only

The previous version of this section broke down a "representative 45 m at USD 2.6M" into nine cost lines. That vessel did not exist and the price was not ours — the whole breakdown was retired. See inc/vessels.php.

Systems

What the Money Buys, Vessel by Vessel

Engine, power and water are the three systems that decide whether a hull can carry paying guests for a week without touching a port.

Vessel Engine Water Asking
VIP XI Mitsubishi 8DC11, 340 HP 8,000 L USD 1,120,000
VIP X Mitsubishi 6D22, 200 HP 8,000 L USD 833,333
VIP VI Mitsubishi 8D C9 13,000 L USD 682,000
VIP V Not published 50 tons USD 553,000
VIP IV Mitsubishi 6D22 & RF 10 25 t + 4 t/day maker USD 553,000
VIP VII Mitsubishi 8DC11 5,000 L USD 444,444
VIP VIII Mitsubishi 6D14, 160 PK 6,000 L USD 444,444
VIP IX Mitsubishi 8DC11, 340 HP 6,000 L USD 444,444
VIP III Mitsubishi 6d16 8,000 L USD 153,000
VIP II Mitsubishi 6d16 5,000 L USD 153,000

The previous table here gave a discount ladder by hull age (10–70% off replacement cost, refit reserves USD 50k–1.2M). Both columns were scaled off the retired prices and neither had a source.

Four factors

What Actually Sets the Market

Four things set the price of a phinisi, and every one is checkable before you make an offer. Across the Indonesian market the spread runs from the low hundreds of thousands of USD into the several millions for expedition-grade new builds.

The previous version of this section quoted percentage premiums against three named shipyards and a designer ladder. None of it had a source and all of it was retired — a buyer negotiating against an invented 12–20% builder premium is arguing with a number nobody in the market recognises.

Hull age and last major refit Ask for the invoice
The date of the last major refit moves a price more than the build year does. Refit invoices come with every listing.
Length and cabin count 3.6x on one length
VIP III and VIP IV are both 27 m. The ten-cabin hull asks 3.6 times the seven-cabin one — cabin count and beam, not length.
Class and survey status Condition of sale
Current class and a clean independent survey are what let a lender or insurer price the asset at all. Survey is a condition of sale in the standard contract.
Charter contracts attached Revenue on request
A vessel transferring with forward bookings carries a premium over an identical hull with an empty calendar.

This section previously listed survey at USD 8–18k, flagging USD 4.5–9k, PMA setup USD 8.5–15k, crew training USD 18–30k and first season USD 40–90k. None had a source and all were retired. Ask the desk for the current schedule of costs and it replaces this section.
